Karen Malan-Uribe is a career ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) elementary school teacher. She co-authored a book, 'Learn and Laugh with Music", and won several grants and awards for the book including: The Washington, DC School Developer Grant, the Teacher to Teacher Award, the Business Week Award for Innovative Teaching, and the prestigious Morris and Gwndolyn Cafritz Foundation's Cafritz Teacher Fellow. Karen has presented this book at the TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) conference.

Karen began her musical studies at an early age under the direction of her father, Allan Malan. Her education began at home, then continued at his music studio, "Starlet Music Center", in Dearborn, Michigan. She appeared on the Ann Dee children's TV program playing her accordion.

Karen is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI), a member of the American Accordionists' Association (AAA), and is the President of the Washington Metropolitan Accordion Society (WMAS), which she co-founded in 2003.
